Dungeness Crab boiled right on the dock

When fishing in Newport, crabbing is a nice side gig to take part in. Placing the pots out on your way to the fishing grounds and pulling them up when you come back in. After pulling up the pots, throwing the females back and the smaller ones that do not make the size; we race back to the docks where the boiling pot is awaiting the catch. 20 minutes in the boiling water and walla, fresh crab for the tasting.

Pacific Halibut possible for tournament? Would be nice

We have picked the weekend of July 16th in the hopes of hitting one of the weekend Halibut catch periods. Pacific Coast Halibut is regulated and limited to 3 or 4 weekends only during the summer months. In 2009 this same weekend saw some nice Halibut catches. Pictures are from the docks at Yaquina Bay Charters.

Rain takes a break, nice size Salmon on first day

The rain was light and intermittent at times, but it cleared up as the day went on and we boated some really nice Chinook Salmon. We caught 3 over the course of the day and a couple that didn’t get to the boat. Overall it was awesome. To see a 15+ pound Salmon cutting across the 50 foot river in 2 seconds was amazing. These are big fish that give a good fight. Check out the photos in the gallery. We’ll be at it again tomorrow for as long as the weather holds.

First day of fishing tommorrow

Looks like the rain is a little behind what we anticipated. Chance of rain off and on tommorrow with it getting heavier as the weekend draws near. Got our fishing licenses and we are off at 7am.  We will be fishing the Yaquina Bay River near Toledo and Elk City. Reports to follow tommorrow night. So far no rain :)

Rain in the forecast for Salmon Trip?

Packing the rain gear and getting the propane heater out. Looks like some rain and wind expected for Newport during our Salmon fishing trip up the river. Won’t really matter to us, We’ll make the best of it and smile for the time we have to try.  Plenty of Kobe beef Chili and Rouge Ale should do the trick.
