Small hope for tournament Halibut fades away.

“The Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife, National Marine Fisheries and the International Pacific Halibut Commission decided that being open for three days had a high likelihood of exceeding the spring quota, which would come out of the much-smaller summer quota. Based on that, and the fact that the next opening is for the 4th of July holiday weekend, it was decided to only open the fishery on Thursday and Friday (July 1 and 2),” said Lynn Mattes, halibut project leader for ODFW. “If any quota remains after that time, it will be rolled into the quota for the summer fishery, which begins in August.” completed article can be found at the ODFW website.

Halibut fishing a small possibility for tournament

Looks like the weekend for the tournament has been chosen as a backup Halibut fishing weekend if the annual spring Halibut catch doesn't yield the quota by then.

Spring Season:
Open dates are May 13-15, May 20-22, and June 3-5.
Backup days (if sufficient quota remains) are June 17-19, July 1-3, July 15-17 and July 29-31.
The catch limit is 105,948 lbs.

Summer Season:
Open every other Friday and Saturday (Aug. 6-7, Aug. 20-21, Sept. 3-4, Sept. 17-18, Oct. 1-2, Oct. 15-16, Oct. 29-30)
until the total subarea all-depth catch limit of 141,265 lbs. is taken.

The near-shore season, for ocean waters inside the 40 fathom line, will be open seven days a week from May 1 until Oct. 31 or until the harvest quota of 12,284 pounds is achieved.

North of Cape Falcon to Leadbetter Point, Wash., sport halibut fishing will be open three days a week, Thursday – Saturday, May 1 through July 18 or until 9,405 pounds of halibut is harvested. The summer season in this area will open three days a week, Friday-Sunday, Aug. 6 through Sept. 27 or the total sub-area harvest reaches 13,436 pounds. Pacific Halibut possible for tournament? Would be nice

We have picked the weekend of July 16th in the hopes of hitting one of the weekend Halibut catch periods. Pacific Coast Halibut is regulated and limited to 3 or 4 weekends only during the summer months. In 2009 this same weekend saw some nice Halibut catches. Pictures are from the docks at Yaquina Bay Charters.
